I'm staying at the Standard in New York at the moment... and I am a fan. So much good. And such pretty bell boys (where do they get them?!).
Anyway, not the point... the point is that no one who gets in the elevator here will ever forget the experience of standing in near pitch black lifts with this extraordinary video installation going on. It's. just. too. weird.

So having finally found out more about it than the sensation of a strange Matthew Barney pastiche, I felt I ought to share the love. The only annoying thing is that this isn't the music in the lifts - so it feels all wrong and rather melodramatic.

Civilization, a video mural created for the new Standard hotel in New York City, by Marco Brambilla, depicts a journey from hell to heaven interpreted through modern film language using computer-enhanced found footage. This epic video mural contains over 300 individual channels of looped video blended into a multi-layered seamless tableau of interconnecting images that illustrate a contemporary, satirical take on the concepts of Heaven and Hell. One of the most impressive and fully realized affect effects projects you will ever see.
